Ohrid - Macedonia's sea

Ohrid is about a three hour journey south from Skopje and it is the largest city on Lake Ohrid in Macedonia. This town is known as Jerusalem of the Balkans, because there are 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Today this number is significantly smaller.

The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and clear lake dominates the town. In 1979 and in 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In fact, Ohrid is one of only 28 sites that are part of UNESCO's World Heritage that are both Cultural and Natural sites. There’s a plenty of things that you can do and see in Ohrid.

I started with visiting probably the most famous church and landmark of all Macedonia. That is a tiny red-brick church of Saint Jovan, Kaneo. This church is situated on the cliff over Kaneo Beach overlooking Lake Ohrid, but you need only about 20 minutes from centre of Ohrid to this beauty. It was built before the 1447 year. Archaeologists believe that the church was constructed some time before the rise of the Ottoman Empire probably in the 13th century. I really enjoyed swimming in the lake, the water is refreshingly cool, because it's deep, but there is no ‘sand beaches', but there are a couple of floating docks you can jump in from, and on the coast are restaurants where you can have a lunch or dinner for 7 to 10$ per meal. I recommend to try fresh fish from the lake and white fish soup.

We walked every day around the old town probably for many hours, it takes so long because there are many things to see, like the ancient theathre, Car Samoil’s castle, the icon gallery all the way down to, house of family Robevi which is today museum of archeology, many churches, but in my opinion the most beautiful are church of St.Sophia, church of St. Panteleimon, church of St. Climent and of course church of St.John at Kaneo. 

Ohrid wasn't just a holy center of the region, it was also the source of knowledge and pan-Slavic literacy. The restored Monastery at Plaosnik before the 10th was actually one of the oldest Universities in the western world, dating  century.

Krka National Park - Skradinski Buk

Krka National Park covers a large area of forests, lakes and rivers and has several entrances. In my opinion the most magnificent is Skradinski Buk waterfall.

There are two entrace; Lozovac and Skradin. We parked our car at the Skradin and there we bought tickets for a boat excursion. Also I must say that is Skradin is very beautiful small town.

The Skradinski Buk is the longest and the loveliest waterfall on the Krka river. This huge waterfall is actually a concentrated series of smaller waterfalls.
There is the wooden bridge that take you into the deep forest, but for me the most interesting was swimming in the cold water at the bottom of the Skradinski Buk. That was amazing experience!

There are plenty of visitor facilities, including pay toilets, an outdoor restaurant and souvenir shops, where I bought swimming suit, because i couldn't resist just to watch others in the water. 

In addition to this one amazing waterfall and the scenic boardwalk, Krka National Park consists of many other, different areas. There are various hiking trails and waterfalls, as well as an old monastery and Roman ruins.
